Answer without looking at your notes. Getting a question wrong now, and seeing why, is one of the most effective ways to make the right answer stick.
Why a practice test is the best way to revise
The testing effect is one of the most replicated findings in learning science: pulling an answer out of memory strengthens it far more than reading it again. In Roediger and Karpicke’s 2006 study, students who spent their time taking practice tests recalled around 50% more a week later than students who reread the passage, though the rereaders predicted they would do better. How to use a generated test
- Take it cold. Close your notes. A test you answer with the notes open measures nothing.
- Read every explanation, including the ones you got right. A lucky guess is not knowledge.
- Put misses on cards. Add each missed fact to the flashcard maker.
- Regenerate in a few days. Each run writes new questions from the same notes, so you cannot just memorise the answer letters. Spread the runs out with the study planner.
Which question type should I pick?
| Type | Best for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | Exams that use MCQs, telling similar concepts apart | Recognition is easier than recall, so a high score can flatter you |
| True / false | Quick checks for common misconceptions | 50% guess rate; always read the explanation |
| Short answer | Essay and written exams, real recall | Mark yourself honestly against the model answer |
For word-for-word recall of a textbook paragraph, a fill in the blank worksheet works well too.
Questions students ask
How do I make a practice test from my notes?
Paste your notes, pick how many questions and which types you want (multiple choice, true/false, short answer or a mix) and press "Generate practice test". Answer the questions, press "Check answers" and you get a score plus an explanation for every question.
Is this AI quiz generator free?
Yes, with no account. There is a fair-use limit of about 20 AI requests per 10 minutes per visitor. The offline "definition quiz" has no limit because it runs in your browser.
Can I print the test?
Yes. Press "Print test" for a clean worksheet; the answer key prints on a separate page after you check your answers, or use "Download with answer key" for a text file.
How are short-answer questions marked?
Short answers are not auto-graded, because a word-matching score would be misleading. After you check, the model answer is shown next to yours and you mark it right or wrong yourself, which is also a useful moment of reflection.
Why is testing yourself better than rereading?
Retrieving an answer strengthens memory more than reviewing it, the "testing effect". Roediger and Karpicke (2006) found students who took practice tests remembered much more a week later than students who restudied the same text, even though the restudy group felt more confident.
