Answer without looking at your notes. Getting a question wrong now, and seeing why, is one of the most effective ways to make the right answer stick.
From PDF to quiz in three steps
- Upload the PDF. Text-based PDFs are read instantly in your browser. If the PDF is a scan, press Read with AI to transcribe up to 10 pages first.
- Check the text. Delete headers, reference lists or pages you are not tested on. The quiz can only be as focused as the text you give it.
- Generate and take it cold. Close the PDF, answer, then press Check answers. Every multiple-choice and true/false question comes with a one-line explanation.
Getting good questions out of a PDF
- One chapter or section per quiz. A focused 3–5 page excerpt gives sharper questions than a whole document trimmed at the limit.
- Use “Focus on” in Test options to point the questions at what your teacher stressed, such as formulas, dates or a named process.
- Slides need difficulty. Bullet-point slides produce shallow recall questions on “Easy”; “Hard” asks you to apply the idea to a new case.
- Tables and equations survive text extraction only partly. If a question looks garbled, fix that line in the box and regenerate.
Why quiz yourself at all? Retrieval practice is one of the two techniques rated high utility in Dunlosky et al.’s 2013 review of learning methods. More on the active recall page. For a full summary, outline and key terms from the same PDF, use the study guide maker.
Questions students ask
How do I turn a PDF into a quiz?
Press "Upload file" (or drop the PDF on the notes box). The text is pulled out of the PDF in your browser and placed in the box. Pick the number of questions and the types, then press "Generate practice test". You answer in the page and get a score with an explanation for each question.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Yes. If a PDF has no selectable text (a scan or photos of pages), the page offers "Read with AI": up to 10 pages are turned into images in your browser and transcribed by an AI vision model, then you can generate the quiz from the transcribed text.
How long can the PDF be?
The quiz is written from up to 12,000 characters, roughly 4 to 6 pages of dense text. Longer PDFs are trimmed to the first 12,000 characters, and the page tells you when that happens. For a whole textbook chapter, copy one section at a time; smaller quizzes are easier to review anyway.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
A text PDF is never uploaded: the text is extracted by pdf.js in your browser. Only the extracted text is sent, once, when you press the AI button, to generate the questions. Scanned pages are sent as images only if you press "Read with AI". Nothing is stored by NoteSynthesis.
Can I make a quiz from lecture slides?
Yes. Export the slides as a PDF, or upload the PowerPoint .pptx file directly. Slides are terse, so choose "Medium" or "Hard" difficulty to get questions that test understanding rather than copying bullet points.
Is it free?
Yes, with no account or watermark. A fair-use limit of about 20 AI requests per 10 minutes per visitor keeps it free.
