Tip: blank the words you would be expected to write in an exam answer, not just any long word.
Getting the most from fill in the blank practice
A cloze exercise is retrieval practice in its smallest form. You see the sentence, you must produce the word. That makes it ideal for terminology: the names of structures, stages, laws and people that you need to write exactly.
- Blank the load-bearing word. In "Oxygen is the final electron acceptor", blanking acceptor tests the idea; blanking the tests nothing.
- Turn the word bank off on your second attempt. Choosing from a list is recognition, not recall.
- Wait, then retry. Redo the same sheet two or three days later; the forgetting curve explains why the gap helps.
Teachers can paste a reading passage and print a class set with the answer key on its own page.
Questions students ask
How does the fill in the blank generator choose words?
It ranks the words in your text by how often they appear and how "technical" they look (capitalised, long or containing numbers), skips common words like "the" or "because", and blanks the highest-ranked word in each sentence. You can blank one or two words per sentence and click any word to blank or unblank it.
Is it free and does it need AI?
It is free and runs entirely in your browser with no AI, so it works offline once the page has loaded and your text never leaves your device.
Can I print the worksheet with an answer key?
Yes. "Print worksheet" prints the gapped text with an optional word bank; the answer key prints on a separate page. "Download .txt" saves both.
Are fill in the blank (cloze) exercises good for studying?
They are a form of retrieval practice: you must produce the missing word rather than recognise it. They work best for vocabulary, definitions and key terms. For deeper understanding, mix them with short-answer questions from the practice test generator.
